WOLF CREEK, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. will be installing additional barrier rail on Interstate 15 (I-15) just south of Wolf Creek the week of October 6.
In an effort to enhance safety, crews will be working to close an existing 190-foot gap in the barrier rail down to 50 feet. This will preserve the authorized turnaround while significantly reducing the risk of crossover collisions.
“This is going to be one of the last pieces of work to finish out this project,” said Matt Tackitt, MDT Great Falls District Engineering Project Manager. “The additional barrier rail and reset of the impact attenuators will help MDT and Riverside increase our number one priority, safety.”
This work is being carried out as part of the I-15 Wolf Creek North/South project that completed principal construction earlier this year. This work is anticipated to take about a week to complete. While this work is taking place, motorists should expect both passing lanes to be closed for approximately one mile near Wolf Creek. Additionally, speed limits will be reduced, and motorists may experience delays at times.
The purpose of the project was to improve the driving surface and enhance roadway safety features on an 8-mile stretch of I-15. The extreme climate and numerous freeze/thaw cycles in Wolf Creek Canyon caused the roadway material to degrade to the point where routine maintenance was no longer practical.
