BIG TIMBER and COLUMBUS, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) will be rehabilitating the bridge deck (the part travelers drive on) on two different bridges next spring. The first is located on Main Boulder Road and spans Interstate 90 (I-90) south of Big Timber in Sweet Grass County. The second bridge is located on Rapelje Road and also spans I-90 northwest of Columbus in Stillwater County.

Proposed work includes milling off the top surface, repairing concrete, and then placing a new concrete overlay on the deck. Other work includes upgrading the approach guardrail, removing the metal guard angles in the bridge deck, replacing expansion joints, and sealing the bridge deck concrete. Limited repairs will be made on the bridge approaches to create a smooth transition.

The purpose of this project is to improve the bridge deck surface condition and extend the service life of each bridge through rehabilitation efforts. It is anticipated that the project team will need to implement temporary single-lane closures to accommodate construction activities.

“We recognize these bridges are critical to the local community as well as state and regional commerce, tourism, and recreation,” said Thaddeus Lesnik, Consultant Project Engineer at MDT. “Our team will work to minimize impacts and disruption to local events and travel as much as is possible.”

Additional information related to project timing, detours, and traffic control will be shared closer to construction.
